Open Burning Season* has begun and runs from January 15th through April 30th. New for this burning season is that Wilbraham Fire Department does NOT have control over authorizing burning on a day-to-day basis; Mass DEP will advise cities and towns if burning is allowed at 8:00 am each day. DEP will permit burning only on days that there is a good air quality forecast assessment made by the State, so on a rainy day they may not allow open burning due to poor air movement and rain holding smoke close to the ground. Burning Permits will still be handed out at Fire Headquarters at 2770 Boston Road, and residents will need a new permit for each burning season. If residents have concerns about the new policy, they may call Sarah Weinstein, Mass DEP at (617) 574-6862 or email her at sarah.weinstein@state.ma.us.
