[ARCHIVED] Hydrant Flushing Program

Hydrant Flushing Program

The Wilbraham Water Department will begin flushing hydrants on Monday, October 16, 2017 from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m.

Part of keeping a water system operating well requires periodically flushing hydrants. Hydrant flushing moves stagnant water that is trapped between valves and the hydrant. It plays an important role in maintaining water quality, reduces corrosion, exercise valves, and maintains a chlorine residual in the system.

When flushing occurs, we are moving a large volume of water very quickly. This will cause turbulence in the system. You may experience low pressure. Water users should check the water for discoloration before using it to wash light colored clothing. The discolored water is bacteriologically safe and will not harm you. We suggest that you flush your toilets several times or run your faucet(s) until it clears. Please clean all screens at your faucets and washing machines.
