[ARCHIVED] Senior Tax Work-Off Abatement Program seeks Applicants for 2020

Senior Tax Work-Off Abatement Program seeks Applicants for 2020

WILBRAHAM - The Town of Wilbraham is accepting applications for 22 positions under the Senior Citizen Volunteer Service and Tax Abatement Program. Senior Citizens selected under this program will work during calendar year 2020 to receive an abatement on their property tax bill for fiscal year 2021 (July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021).

Basic requirements are that taxpayers must be over 60 years of age, must be an assessed owner of property in Wilbraham, and must have owned and occupied a home in Wilbraham for at least five years.

The current compensation is calculated at $12.00 per hour, and the maximum allowable abatement is $1,500.00 per property. Seniors will need to work 125 hours to receive the full abatement of $1,500.00 (less federal income tax and Medicare deductions). There are 22 positions that are being offered this year:

The positions being offered are:

Library: 4 Pages

Public Access Television: 5 Production Producers

Selectmen’s Office: 1 Office Assistant

Senior Center: 4 Office Assistant/Receptionists; and 2 Van Drivers

Building Department: 1 Assistant Clerk

Clerk’s Office: 2 Office Assistants

Treasurer/Collector’s Office: 3 Office Assistants

Hours are flexible and will be worked out on an individual basis between the department director and the senior worker, but must be completed by November 30, 2020.

This program is beneficial for both senior residents and non-senior taxpayers. Seniors have an opportunity to lower their property tax bill, and taxpayers are benefitting from the superior talent and work experience seniors bring to the job at a very low cost to the town.

Interested senior residents can pick up applications and information packets at the senior center, library, or Selectmen’s Office, or print it from here. Applications should be submitted to the Office of the Board of Selectmen no later than December 30, 2019.
